National Health Insurance Plan Germany

National Health Insurance Plan Germany

Why do I pay less in foriegn countries for health care but more in the USA for the same service?

OK I mentioned this a few times but I recently had a child in Germany…(one of those socialized countries) The final bill was $3000 dollars in the States 2 years ago for our first child it costs $10,000. The service in Germany was just as good if not better? A an American working over here as a contractor to the USA government we of course our private insurance in both places(Yes you can still have private insurance under a national plan). Whats up with that? Why do we pay so much as Americans? Why are the same prescription drugs made in Canada cheaper than American made meds if from the same American based company?(Pfizer)

Your premise for funding is fundamentally flawed. You pay as much or more in countries with socialized medicine (which is rationed). It shows up in the form of higher taxes. That’s why the USA wants no part of that nonsense.

Excerpt: The German word Beamter (female: Beamtin or Beamte, plural: Beamte) means civil servant, and is pronounced , with a glottal stop between the ‘e’ and the ‘a’. This English translation may be ambiguous, as German law puts public employees into two classes, namely ordinary employees (Angestellte) and Beamte, making a distinction that does not exist in most other national bodies of law. The original idea was that whoever represents the state by doing official duties (hoheitliche Aufgaben), such as issuing official documents or making official decisions, should have a special kind of employment with the state. Today, such functions are often executed by non-Beamte, which means that the position of Beamte is distinguished by the supposed advantages that it confers, such as a special health plan (the Beihilfe, which covers half of many of the expenses, the other part being the responsibility of the Beamter himself), an index-linked pension of (at most) 71.5% of the last salary, paid directly by the state instead of the usual public (also state-run) pension insurance, and most importantly, the virtual impossibility of losing one’s job (basically, the state may only terminate employment in cases of serious felonies). Compared to other employees, civil servants …

This volume is a revised edition of The Institute for Contemporary Study's report on national health insurance (NHI). The debate on the NHI program has broadened in recent years as a greatly intensified public consciousness about costs has been faced with an enormous drain on public budgets from greatly underestimated cost estimates for Medicare and Medicaid. As budget limitations reduced prospects for a full, comprehensive plan, the policy debate broadened. The Carter administration began to emphasize its program for hospital cost containment, focusing on that medical sector which had shown greatest cost increases. Moreover, other proposals began to make their way through congressional committees to change in a fundamental way the incentives governing medical markets. These new approaches-which seek, fundamentally, to increase competition among providers of medical care-have appeared at a time when it is becoming clear that more conventional regulatory efforts at cost control have not been successful in other countries, such as West Germany. This edition includes an analysis of legislation currently before Congress, an examination of hospital cost increases and cost containment, an investigation of the politics of the NHI that asks if any major interest group involved in health care wants increased competition, new research on both the NHS in Britain and Canada's relatively recent experiments with full NHI, a discussion of the subsidy of health care, and an analysis of the market for medical care and the effects of an NHI on the market for physicians.
