What is the Cost of Weight Loss Surgeries in Canada?

Over the years, obesity has become a serious health problem in Canada. As more people realize the health risks associated with obesity, they are turning to weight loss surgery as a way to lose weight and improve their health. There have been a number of different types of weight loss surgeries developed to help people lose weight and live longer. When considering weight loss surgery, one has to factor in the costs of the surgery as this method of achieving weight loss has associated costs.

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is the most common self-financed weight loss surgery. Laparoscopic banding surgery can cost anywhere from $16,000 to $20,000. Costs for this procedure can very and normally depends on the type of band used in the surgery and the post-operative care program provided after surgery. Since the adjustable gastric band surgery has been shown to be a successful treatment for obesity related health problems such as breathing problems, hypertension, Type II diabetes, and hypertension, it is considered a medical expense, which make the weight loss procedure eligible for Canadian federal tax credits.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass is another popular type of weight loss surgery. Most Canadian provinces consider this weight loss surgery as a treatment of morbid obesity and therefore an insured service under the publicly funded Medicare Act. Each province will have varying stipulations so it is important to check with your particular province’s health authority. When using Medicare to pay for the surgery, there can often be a 3-5 year wait period when using a publicly funded hospital.

In Ontario, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) as well as other provincial health plans does not provide coverage for the adjustable gastric band surgery. There are a few private insurance companies that may provide reimbursement for some of the costs associated with the surgery. One will have to check with their own insurance company to see if they provide some type of coverage that will cover most or all of the medical costs.

There are many reasons why people choose weight loss surgery. Most obese people have higher rates of health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and lung illnesses. These conditions are improved or eliminated after weight loss surgery. As well, people will often have the surgery after trying all other methods of achieving weight loss have failed and choose this as a last resort.

If you are considering weight loss surgery, you will want to have a consultation with a weight loss surgeon because there are specific criteria that have to be met in order to be considered a candidate for the procedure.

Weight loss surgery has helped millions of people lose a large amount of weight and improve their physical appearance and health. Because this type of surgery is a privately funded procedure, it is important to explore all of your financial options so that you make the best financial choice. Many obese people consider weight loss surgery as an investment in their health and well being.
