Oxford Health Insurance Plans For Individuals

Oxford Health Insurance Plans For Individuals

Individual health insurance on unemployment? (Not eligible for Medicaid)?

Can I buy a plan for health insurance? Apparently I make 10 dollars over the limit for Medicaid & Family Health Plus & am not eligible. I’m unemployed my dr. told me I should get an MRI of my neck (chronic swollen gland). I could go to an emergency room, but then I would have to pay??

It would be for a single person. Can I buy a plan from Oxford or another company?

p.s.- i live in NYC

Yes, you can buy an individual plan and depending on the plan you choose, the premium can cost you anywhere from $60 to $400. It is expensive but its better to get it before you get diagnosed with any medical conditions, since they probably won’t be covered under your policy since they’re pre-existing. Just make sure to research it properly, because it is a jungle. Remember to look at things like co-pay for different kinds of doctor’s visits, deductible (how much you’ll have to pay yourself before the insurance starts to pay), prescription coverage, annual check-ups, the maximum amounts they’ll pay for certain things, what they pay for hospital stays, exclusion and if it covers vision, dental and pregnancy (if you’re a woman, obviously.)
If you already need an MRI I would try to get a plan with a low deductible, or no deductible at all. As an example, I have an individual Blue Cross plan and I pay $345 a month. That’s a lot of money. But I have no deductible, meaning BC starts paying the first time I get sick. My co-pay is $20 for a regular office visit, $35 for a specialist (which includes OBGYN’s), $40 for urgent care, $100 for ER visits. The prescription coverage is by tiers, but most meds only run me $4 for a months supply.
So although my premium is relatively high, it pays of since I have a medical condition that in the past year have required 1 surgery, 2 hospital stays, 3 ER visits, more office visits than I could tell you, 2 MRI’s, 1 CT-scan and several monthly prescriptions.
That is why you’ll have to choose based on your individual situation, but just remember that if you get a plan now, it will be a blessing when the unforeseen happens.

UnitedHealth Group is the parent of UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest health insurers in the U.S. It was created in 1977, as UnitedHealthCare Corporation (it renamed itself in 1998), but traces its origin to a firm it acquired in 1977, Charter Med Incorporated, which was founded in 1974. In 1979, it introduced the first network-based health plan for seniors. In 1984, it became a publicly traded company. In a recent insurance industry publication, Business Insurance, United was named “readers choice” winner 2007 for “Best Managed care organization”. To contrast, however, in a recent non-insurance industry survey of health care executives who have dealt with the company, United received a 91% unfavorable ratingthe worst ranking among all listed. In 1995, the company acquired The MetraHealth Companies Inc. for $1.75 billion.
